Madison – Governor Scott Walker today honored seven individuals and 13 organizations with the 2013 Governor’s Financial Literacy Award for their efforts in promoting financial literacy among Wisconsin citizens.
“Through their work to advance the cause of financial literacy, these worthy individuals and organizations are positively impacting the lives of thousands of people in communities across Wisconsin,” said Governor Walker, who hosted the recipients in a ceremony at the Capitol. “Personal financial literacy is an important skill that can substantially improve the quality of life for people of all ages.”
“As financial services for consumers continue to evolve rapidly, the need for personal financial literacy has never been greater,” said Peter Bildsten, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions and Co-Vice Chair of the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy. “The recipients of this award are on the front lines of providing their fellow Wisconsinites with those skills.”
The recipients were selected from 52 nominations submitted to the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy for consideration. Criteria used in the screening process included innovative implementation, demonstrated measureable results, collaboration with partners, and whether the effort was focused on needs-based groups.

The Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy was created by Executive Order #24 and held its inaugural meeting in April 2011. The mission of the Council is to measurably improve the financial literacy of Wisconsin citizens.
The Council is chaired by William E. Wilcox, MCE, President of CBM Credit Education Foundation Inc. of Madison. Co-vice chairs are Secretary Bildsten and Ted Nickel, Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. David Mancl, Director of DFI’s Office of Financial Literacy, is Executive Director of the Council.
